Part I

- To introduce students to the various sources of contract and tort law.
- To introduce students to the basic principles of liability in contract and tort.
- To develop an understanding of the basic principles and laws of contract and tort and their application in Hong Kong.
- To develop an understanding and appreciation of the relevance of contract and tort to the students’ major discipline.
- To enable students to pursue an in depth study of some of the contract and tort issues which have particular relevance to the students’ major discipline.

Assessment Tasks/Activities (Indicative of likely activities and tasks designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs. Final details will be provided to students in their first week of attendance in this course) ILO No | Type of assessment tasks/activities | Weighting (if applicable) | Remarks | CILOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 | Examination ( 3 hours) The examination will contain problem based questions which will test students’ abilities to identify legal issues, describe the relevant legal principles as extracted from cases and legislation, and apply the legal principles to the factual scenarios raised in the questions. The examination may also contain essay type questions which will test students’ ability to describe and explain legal principles. Assignment Students are given a month to attempt an assignment question. The question is a lengthy problem based question which would raise a number of legal issues. Students are expected to spot all relevant legal issues and apply the legal rules and principles from cases and legislation.

Grading of Student Achievement: Refer to Grading of Courses in the Academic Regulations. Grading pattern: Standard (A+, A, A-…F)
The assessment tasks of this course shall include a take home assignment and a 3-hour open book examination. Both take home assignment and open book examination shall consist of essays and problem based question. The students’ performance shall be assessed in accordance with their overall achievement of the intended learning outcomes in both take home assignment and examination. The grading of students’ performance shall be based on their level of achievement of the intended learning outcomes – Grade D for marginal; Grade C-, C, C+ for adequate; Grade B-, B, B+ for good; and Grade A-, A, A+ for excellent. Coursework: 30% Examination: 70% A student must obtain a minimum mark of 30% in both coursework and examination and an overall mark of 40% in order to pass. Part III Keyword Syllabus:
