LS12162 Communication Skills for Designers

Course Aims The course aims to help students understand basic communication theories in organizations and the print media. It helps learners acquire techniques for improving design-related presenting and writing in English. In addition, it also focuses on enhancing learners’ confidence in reading, speaking and writing English in the workplace. Upon completing the course, students should be able to: develop and apply effective English reading and writing skills in order to identify and summarize key features and concepts in graphic design texts in English; apply communication theories to small group and organizational communication in the field of design; apply appropriate register, format and tone in formal business English correspondence; synthesize and apply written, spoken English and IT skills in the creation of an English communication product; and present design-related topics in English using appropriate linguistic, communication and IT skills.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: perform with high competence and confidence as: (a) Professional communicators in English at the Associate Professional/Professional level in a range of positions; (b) Bachelor degree students at advanced standing; demonstrate specialized abilities in the use of English for professional and academic purposes; explore issues critically, generate inferences, and communicate them in appropriate, fluent and precise English to others; demonstrate a strong command of communication technology skills; synthesize from a broad knowledge base, including language, social, cultural and economic areas, to create new perspectives and communicate them in appropriate, fluent and precise English to others; and possess and apply strong generic skills, especially in interpersonal communication, quantitative and analytical skills, and the ability to learn how to learn.
