Part II

Course Aims:
This course is designed to foster critical understanding of how language is encoded and loaded with different cultural and ideological values and the different ways in which language can be used to mediate ideological representations and constructions of different social categories (e.g., gender, race, class, sexuality) in mass media.  Students will be introduced to some basic analytical methods in critical linguistic analysis.

  • Acquire a general understanding of the theories of ideology developed to understand the ideological nature of language and discourse, and how these ideologies are proliferated through hegemonic discourses.

  • Help students acquire an understanding of different possible approaches to critical analysis.

  • Understand how socio-political categories (e.g. class, gender, race, sexuality, as well as terrorism and freedom-figher etc.) are constructed through everyday public discourse, mainly media texts and political discourse.

  • Employ critical discourse analytical methods to analyze both traditional and new media texts, as well as political discourses to uncover hidden ideologies.

CILO 1

  • Lectures and readings will help acquaint students with the different perspectives scholars have on ideology, propaganda and Gramsci’s notion of hegemony.

  • Lectures and readings will be helpful in introducing different approaches to critical analysis, including study of multidimensional approaches.

  • Critical analysis of ideological discourses in class through group work, including newspaper articles, political speeches, advertisements, and various visuals. These will help students apply theories and concepts to real life discourses.

  • Application of theories and approaches to critical analysis to selective ideological discourses will provide practice of using tools of discourse analysis on public discourses.

    Help students work in groups in order to share and negotiate different perspectives in the critical analysis of ideological discourses. Assess accuracy of content and language style, understanding of topic, use of outside resources and references.

  • Building a portfolio
    Portfolio will allow students to apply theories which they have learnt to different types of ideological discourses, giving them an understanding of the characteristics of different genres of discourses.
