Course Aims:

This course aims to develop your ability to use English to:
§          write an effective argumentative essay
§          write an effective report

Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)

The following are designed to help you achieve the CILOs:

CILO

In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to:

1construct visual and/or textual maps about different topics
2critique ideas – your own and others' – and comment on their relevance
3analyze texts to evaluate structure, organization and content
1-6practise writing (sections of) essays and reports
2-5give and receive feedback on your writing
5edit and revise writing based on feedback
6do focused activities to expand vocabulary

Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve. 


Assessment Tasks/Activities

There are two coursework assessments. The following assessment tasks are designed to assess how well you achieve the CILOs: 

Coursework Assessment One (20%)
 

i.

Assessment Task Description

 You will submit a report that describes a problem and presents possible solutions and/or recommendations for the problem.

ii.

CILOs Assessed

 This task assesses your ability to:
§      select relevant ideas (CILO 2)
§      structure and organize ideas logically (CILO 3)
§      analyze a problem and provide possible solutions/recommendations (CILO 4)
§      express ideas in writing, supporting this with evidence (CILO 5)
Note: CILOs 1 & 6 are assessed indirectly through the ideas that are used.

iii.

 You will write an argumentative essay on a topical issue.

ii.

 This task assesses your ability to the following in writing:

§      structure and organize ideas logically (CILO 3)
§      express ideas in writing, supporting this with evidence (CILO 5)
Note: CILOs 1 & 6 are assessed indirectly through the ideas that are used.

 You will read about a problem. Then, you will analyze it and write a short report providing possible solutions and/or recommendations.

§      analyze and discuss a problem and provide possible solutions/recommendations (CILO 4)
§      express ideas in writing, supporting this with evidence (CILO 5)

 You will read two questions/statements. Then, you will respond to one of them by writing an argumentative essay.

§      structure and organize ideas logically (CILO 3)
§      express ideas in writing, supporting this with evidence (CILO 5)
