EL1012 Reading and Text Analysis
Part I Course Duration: 24 hours Credit Units: 1 Level: A Medium of Instruction: English Prerequisites: NIL Precursors: NIL Equivalent Courses: Exclusive Courses: NA Coursework Assessment: 50% Examination: 50% CILO 1 use text signals such as linking words, signposting expressions and reference words to help you understand the content of texts 2 identify main ideas and supporting details 3 use appropriate reading styles for different purposes (e.g. skimming, scanning and reading for detail) 4 deal with unknown vocabulary 5 make a written record of what you have read in a range of ways, (e.g. notes, summaries, charts, etc.) Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) The following are designed to help you achieve the CILOs: CILO In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to: 1-2 use your experience and world knowledge to help you understand texts 2-3 read texts for understanding (including reading quickly for general meaning and skipping through a text to find a specific section) 1 analyze texts to see how different text signals are used 5 read texts and create notes, summaries and/or concept maps 5 analyze visual and textual information (e.g. tables and charts) to describe trends and make comparisons 1, 4 use clues in the texts to guess the meaning of unknown words 4 use different ways of organizing, recording and using new vocabulary Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve. Assessment Task Description There will be three sections in this assessment: ii. CILOs Assessed This task assesses your ability to: Section 1 MAIN IDEAS TEXT SIGNALS VOCABULARY The ability to identify main ideas and supporting details of the text The ability to identify linking words, signpost expressions, ellipsis and referencing words The ability to deal with unknown vocabulary CILO 2 CILO 1 CILO 4 INTERPRETING VISUAL DATA The ability to identify main ideas and supporting details and make a written record of what you have read CILOs 2 & 5 Section 3 ORGANIZATION TASK ACHIEVEMENT LANGUAGE The ability to write an organized passage with evidence of coherence and cohesion The ability to answer the question by including all relevant information The range and accuracy of grammar and vocabulary CILO 5 CILO 5 CILO 5 i.
