Part II

Course Aims
This course aims to develop your ability to read and understand academic and non-academic texts.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

identify main ideas and supporting details

use appropriate reading styles for different purposes (e.g. skimming, scanning and reading for detail)

deal with unknown vocabulary

make a written record of what you have read in a range of ways, (e.g. notes, summaries, charts, etc.)

The following are designed to help you achieve the CILOs:

In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to:

use your experience and world knowledge to help you understand texts

read texts for understanding (including reading quickly for general meaning and skipping through a text to find a specific section)

analyze texts to see how different text signals are used

read texts and create notes, summaries and/or concept maps

analyze visual and textual information (e.g. tables and charts) to describe trends and make comparisons

use clues in the texts to guess the meaning of unknown words

use different ways of organizing, recording and using new vocabulary

Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve.

Coursework Assessment One (15%)

i.

Assessment Task Description

 

You will do a reading comprehension task marked online.

ii.

This task assesses your ability to:

use appropriate reading styles (e.g. skimming, scanning, and reading for detail)

Coursework Assessment Two (35%)

i.

Assessment Task Description

 

 

There will be three sections in this assessment:

In the first section you will have a reading comprehension similar to Assessment One.

In the second section, you will have some visual information in the form of a concept map, chart or table and you will fill in the gaps with appropriate information.

In the third section, you will write a passage of 150–200 words based on data provided.
