Course Aims
 
This course aims to develop your ability to use English to:

-   participate in and manage a discussion
-  
listen actively and take notes
-  
present data using basic presentation skills

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

CILO

In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to:

watch lectures and practice note-taking

watch videos to practice prediction, answer comprehension questions and use notes to do this

create a list of useful symbols and abbreviations for note-taking

evaluate bad and good presentations (in-house video)

practice information extraction and organization of data

organize a short presentation with clear signposting

role play a series of meetings to practice management and discussion skills

play communication games to practice use of discussion skills, signposting, body language and eye contact

Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve.

Coursework Assessment One (10%)

This task assesses your ability to:

use a range of strategies to improve listening (CILO 1) including listening for gist, detail and main ideas

use prediction skills to aid listening comprehension (CILO 2)

iii.

Assessment Criteria

 

The assessment will be marked by the online platform system.

Assessment Task Description

 

You will:
-   watch/listen to a lecture/talk and answer a variety of question types
-   answer MC comprehension questions and open-ended questions
-   complete flow chart in a mind map

ii.

This task assesses your ability to:
-  
use a range of strategies to improve listening (CILO 1) including separating main ideas from supporting details

iii.

Assessment Criteria

 

The assessment will be marked by the online platform system with the exception of the open-ended answers that will be marked by teachers.
