Part I Course Duration: 36 hours Credit Units: 1 Level: A Medium Of Instruction: English Prerequisites: NIL Precursors: NIL Equivalent Courses: Exclusive Courses: NA Coursework Assessment: 100% Examination: NA Course Aims - participate in and manage a discussion CILO 1 use a range of strategies to improve listening 2 use prediction skills to aid listening comprehension 3 record information accurately and in an organized way in order to answer questions (note-taking) 4 give an oral presentation using data in an organized manner 5 participate in and manage a discussion/meeting in an organized and productive manner 6 use non verbal skills to assist in both discussion and presentation situations Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) CILO In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to: 1-3 watch lectures and practice note-taking 1-3 watch videos to practice prediction, answer comprehension questions and use notes to do this 3 create a list of useful symbols and abbreviations for note-taking 4, 6 evaluate bad and good presentations (in-house video) 1, 4 practice information extraction and organization of data 4, 6 organize a short presentation with clear signposting 5-6 role play a series of meetings to practice management and discussion skills 5-6 play communication games to practice use of discussion skills, signposting, body language and eye contact Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve. AssessmentTasks/Activities There are four coursework assessments. The following assessment tasks are designed to assess how well you achieve the CILOs: i. Assessment Task Description You will: ii. PREDICTION GIST DETAILS MAIN IDEAS The ability to predict the content from the title of the talk The ability to identify the overall idea of the text The ability to listen for specific information The ability to distinguish main ideas from supporting details CILO 2 CILO 1 CILO 1 CILO 1 i. Assessment Task Description You will: ii. CILOs Assessed This task assesses your ability to: iii. Assessment Criteria The assessment will be marked by the online platform system with the exception of the open-ended answers that will be marked by teachers.
