Course Aims

This course aims to enhance students' understanding and use of the four main skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing in an academic context.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to:

do writing tasks that focus on: (a) language use, (b) organization and coherence, and (c) content and development

post and respond to writing online

have group discussion practice, with emphasis on (a) comprehensibility, (b) ideas, and (c) discussion skills

read texts and answer accompanying questions

4

listen to passages and answer accompanying questions

brainstorm, select and develop ideas

do focused activities to expand vocabulary

Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in evaluating your own and other people's work, receiving and providing feedback, and using this to help you improve.

There are three coursework assessments and one end-of-course examination.

You will listen to a short discussion or mini-lecture and answer multiple choice and open-ended questions.

Listening for gist, main ideas and specific details

Identifying parts of speech

Guessing the meaning of words in context.
