A.          Course Aims:
This course aims to:

  • develop your independent learning skills and ability to exploit available language learning opportunities;
  • enable you to use English to live and study in an overseas environment.

B.           Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

D.           Assessment Tasks/Activities

The following tasks are designed to assess how well you achieve all the CILOs.  You must complete both tasks to a satisfactory standard in order to pass the course.

          Coursework Assessment One

          (i) Assessment Task Description.

Select an English language course appropriate to your needs with at least 24 hours of classroom contact time.  Submit details of the course curriculum and assessments for approval before starting the course, and preferably before going overseas.  Complete all course requirements.      

(ii) CILOs Assessed

This task assesses your ability to:

l           select and complete an appropriate classroom-based language course (CILO 2):

(iii) Assessment criteria:

l           Course chosen is appropriate level and supports identified needs

l           Course is completed successfully.

Coursework Assessment Two

            (i) Assessment Task Description

                Complete a learning journal, documenting the actions you are taking to try to improve your English language ability
                and reflecting on how successful you are.  The journal should include a minimum of ten entries, including an 
                analysis of some cultural differences between Hong Kong and the country you are studying in.

 (ii) CILOs Assessed

 This task assesses your ability to:

l           recognize your learning needs with regard to English language (CILO 1)

l           identify and exploit the language learning opportunities available to you overseas (CILO 3)

l           reflect on and assess your learning progress (CILO 4)

l           describe some of the cultural differences between Hong Kong and the country in which you are studying (CILO 5)

             (iii) Assessment criteria:
