Course Aims


This course aims to develop your ability to:
§          identify the various elements of English pronunciation and apply them to help you speak clearly and understand the rapid connected speech of others 


Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)

On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)

The following are designed to help you achieve the CILOs:

CILO

In this course you will work individually, in pairs and in groups to:

1read the International Phonemic Alphabet (IPA) chart and practice using it to identify how a word is pronounced
2practise listening and discriminating between similar sounds
3, 4listen to examples of natural rapid speech and identify various features of pronunciation
5-7do controlled practice activities focusing on specific features of pronunciation
5-7practise various features of pronunciation through reading aloud, discussions and other speaking tasks
8, 9evaluate your own performance and that of other students and identify ways to improve

Throughout all teaching and learning activities you will be expected to participate actively in
producing the sounds and sentences. You are expected to record your performance on a recording device, and use this to help you evaluate yourself and other co-learners to improve.
 


Assessment Tasks/Activities

There are three coursework assessments. The following assessment tasks are designed to assess how well you achieve the CILOs. 

Assessment One (30%)

i.

Assessment Task Description

 You will read aloud a passage and record it. This will be compared with a Diagnostic Test recorded in Lesson One.

ii.

CILOs Assessed

This task assesses your ability to:
§      pronounce the sounds of English accurately (CILO 5)
§      use stress, contractions and linking appropriately (CILO 6)
§      use pausing and intonation appropriately (CILO 7)
§      identify your own areas of weakness and improve your performance in these areas (CILOs 8, 9)

Assessment Two (30%)

i.

Assessment Task Description

 You will:
§      Section 1: listen to sound clips and identify the words you hear
§      Section 2: listen to sound clips of words and identify the correct word in phonemic script§      Section 3: read phonemic script and identify the word
§      Section 4: listen to natural rapid speech and write down what is said
§      Section 5: listen to sound clips and choose the correct meaning of the intonation

ii.

CILOs Assessed

This task assesses your ability to:
§      use phonemic script as an aid to accurate speech (CILO 1)
§      identify the sounds of English (CILO 2)
§      identify the features of connected speech such as stress patterns, contractions, linking and assimilation (CILO 3)
§      identify how pausing and intonation affect meaning (CILO 4)

iii.

Assessment Three (40%)

i.

Assessment Task Description

 You will form groups and take up a role in a radio play with a given script. The radio play will be recorded and assessed in the presence of the teacher.

ii.

CILOs Assessed

This task assesses your ability to:
§      pronounce the sounds of English accurately (CILO 5)
§      use stress, contractions and linking appropriately (CILO 6)
§      use pausing and intonation appropriately (CILO 7)

iii.

Assessment Criteria

You will be given an individual mark, which is worth 50% of the total mark for the assessment.You will be given a group mark, which is worth 50% of the total mark for the assessment.
