Part II  

Course Aims:

This course aims to strengthen students’ reading and writing skills required for government and public administration, and to reinforce oral skills relevant to professional activities.

Lecture –

Key concepts and issues in the study of Chinese for government and public administration are introduced. Special emphasis is placed on the transformation of usage, including lexical, syntactic, semantic, discursive and stylistic features of the Chinese language used in the field. An example-based approach is adopted in which various usage patterns are illustrated with data drawn from real-life contexts.

Tutorial –

Tutorials will feature selected articles from various sources, such as government policy documents, news commentaries, etc. Students will be guided with the analysis of these articles by making use of the methods introduced in the lectures. Students will then form tutorial groups and give presentations based on their discussion and analysis of these articles. After presentation, each group will hand-in a tutorial paper based on their presentation.

Each student will give a ten-minute public speech regarding government policy or current affairs. Students will select their own topics.

Assignments –

Students will be given written assignments. Topics include official letters, notices and announcements, minutes and reports, rules and regulations, proposals, press releases, speeches, contracts, advertisements, etc.
