Part II


Course Aims:

This course aims to assess the historical content of a variety of heritage sites and to develop a consideration of the relationship between heritage, the past and history. The primary focus will be East Asia but North American and Western European material will be used for comparative purposes. The course will introduce students to the history of the main civilizations in East Asia, including Japan, Korea and China, from the 7th century to the 19th century and the cultural exchanges between these countries and their contacts with the West. We will introduce students to a varied and representative sample of ways in which the past has been preserved, presented and consumed throughout history.

Group discussion, presentations and debates will involve students in active learning through interaction and reflection. There will be  fieldtrips to local museums and site visits of historical heritage in Hong Kong.

  • One individual paper (1,500 words minimum) focusing upon the conceptual issues raised in the first half of the course

  • One group presentation. The presentation should be either a critical assessment of a heritage site or a discussion of an essay type question on heritage. The project will be carried out upon a heritage site of the groups' choice in consultation with the instructor.
