Part II

Course Aims:

The course aims to provide an up-to-date knowledge of high-speed networks to students.  The course covers basic concepts, architectures, protocols, advantages and limitations, and recent development of various high-speed networking technologies; and how the various networks cope with multimedia data transmission and some multimedia applications in both wired and wireless environments.  The current and future developments in high-speed networks are discussed.  Multimedia applications such as Video on Demand, and multimedia streaming are also discussed.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs):

No.

To achieve the ILO, the students are required to do all the tutorial exercises and assignments.  In addition, the students are supposed to demonstrate their critical thinking capability through essay writing and presentations.

The basic concepts will be covered in the lectures, which will include case studies of different concepts and characteristics of high speed multimedia networking to help the students apply their knowledge to real-life problems.  The tutorials provide an opportunity for the students to discuss and deepen their understanding of material learnt during the lectures. A series of test/assignments, aimed at helping with the students' learning the concepts, approaches, protocols and techniques, will be offered.  The test and assignment results will also serves as feedback so that the lecturer can adjust the presentations accordingly.

Assessment Tasks/Activities:
(Indicative of likely activities and tasks designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs. Final details will be provided to students in their first week of attendance in this course)
