Course Aims:


This course aims to allow students the opportunity to appreciate a real (computer oriented) working environment; to relate the concepts and principles of the behavioural and organisational disciplines of the programme to that ‘real’ environment; and to put into practice some of the methods, tools and techniques of the computer related disciplines of the programme.

Teaching pattern:
The IT professional placement is a year of full-time employment in the computing industry where students will work in areas related to their program of study.  Each student will be assigned an academic supervisor who will establish contact with the student's company supervisor to review progress of the student and at the end of placement, to formally solicit the employer's assessment of the student's performance and weakness.

From meetings with the student the academic supervisor will assess the student's progress in achieving the objectives of placement.

  • Special training arranged with Student Development Services for CV writing and interview techniques to achieve ILO #1 and #2.

  • Supervision and feedback from working supervisor to achieve ILO #4.

Grading of Student Achievement:

Assessment will be on a Pass or Fail basis.

Student's performance will be assessed based on the following:

  1. Placement Interim Feedback Form on student's performance in December;
  2. Placement Feedback Form (for final evaluation) in June;
  3. Placement Report;
  4. Student participation and attendance at Review meetings with academic supervisor.

Based on the above evidence the academic supervisor will recommend, via the Placement Co-ordinator, that the student be awarded either a Pass or Fail grade.
