CS3262 Systems Software and Networks
Course Aims & Objectives: 3.1 Aims This course aims to develop a broad understanding of: 3.1.1 real time aspects of software systems; and 3.1.2 network technologies so that students will be able to confidently manage the computer Systems used in a CIM environment.
3.2 Objectives The objective of this course is that upon completion of this module, students should: 3.2.1 have a clear idea of the role of the operating systems in computer systems management and applications; 3.2.2 understand the special needs of real time software systems; 3.2.3 understand the basic technology of networks.

Device driver interfaces. Scheduling. User Interface. System call. Command processor. Process creation. Systems Services. Utility Programmes and System Software. Language processors, editors, linker and loaders; programme development tools. Real Time Operating Systems. Concurrent Processes and Synchronization. Concurrent I/O. Mutual exclusion, deadlock. Real Time Executive. Sample rate and response time requirements. Task scheduling to meet real time requirements. Data Transmission and Networks. Synchronization and asynchronous serial transmission, modems; error detection. Network architecture; protocols and standards; layered model. Local Area Networks. Access protocols. CSMA/CD, token passing.
Teaching Pattern: Duration of course: 1 semester Current mix of lecture/tutorial/laboratory, other: 2 hrs. Lecture; 1 hr. tutorial.
Assessment Pattern: Examination duration: 2 hours Percentage distribution of marks for coursework, examination, other: 30% CW, 70% Exam Grading pattern: Standard (A+AA-...F) For a student to pass the course, at least 30% of the maximum mark for the examination must be obtained.
