CS3172 Information Technology for Primary Education

Course Aims & Objectives:
This course aims to develop knowledge and skill for the student to effectively utilize IT in primary school classrooms.  These include adequate knowledge to convey IT concepts and uses, develop courseware utilizing CAI/CAL tools and multimedia technology.  The student will also be able to use the computer effectively and be able to use the Internet, especially the WWW, as information and communication resources.  He/she will also be able to set up web sites for the dissemination of information to various parties, including students and parents.  In addition, the student should be able to participate in the specification of computing tools and systems for use in the schools.

Keyword Syllabus:
Basic computer architecture and concepts, hardware components, software components, operating systems, user interfaces; Case studies and use of OS, word processing, presentation, and desktop publishing tools.
Basic network architecture and concepts, fundamentals of data communications, local area networks, Internet structure, Internet addresses and domain names, client-server computing, Internet application protocols, FTP, E-mail, WWW, hypermedia document, HTML, web publishing; information security.
Multimedia concepts and tools, digital image and audio formats, video formats.  Capture and editing tools.
CAL concepts and designs, authoring tools and practices.
Files and Database concepts, file usage, database tools.
Applications in school administration and management.

Teaching Pattern:
Duration of course: 2 semesters
Current mix of lecture/tutorial/laboratory, other: 2 hrs lecture, 1 hr tutorial, 1.5 hrs workshop

Assessment Pattern:
Examination duration: 2 hours
Percentage distribution of marks for coursework, examination, other: 60% CW; 40% Exam
Grading pattern: Standard (A+AA-...F)
For a student to pass the course, at least 30% of the maximum mark for the examination must be obtained.
