Part II

Course Aims

  • Provide an introduction to the financial statements provided by a business, the accounting process and fundamental accounting concepts. The concepts and techniques of analysing accounting information in a user decision making context are emphasized.
  • Introduce students to the important role played by cost and revenue (and related) information in the management of an organisation in the contemporary business environment.   
  • Develop the ability of students to analyse and interpret financial statements for the purposes of assessing performance and making financial decisions.
  • Expose students to ethical issues in accounting.

Interactive seminars focusing on the analysis of an entity’s economic transactions, analysis of financial statements, introduction of important role played by cost and revenue (and related) information in the management of an organization, and demonstration of budget planning.

Analysis and interpretation of financial statements with due consideration to ethical concerns, and sensitivity of accounting information from discretionary accruals and expenditures.

Coursework: 50%

AT1   Class-based assessment activities (10-15%) such as quizzes, assignments and participation to assess students’ understanding and knowledge of the weekly topics.

AT2     Mid-term test (20-30%) to provide a mid-semester assessment of students’ competence level of the topics.

AT3     A case study / group project (10-20%) during the semester to provide continuous assessment of students’ understanding and knowledge on topics on the weekly teaching schedule.

Examination:  50% (a 2-hour examination)

AT4     A written examination to assess students’ competence level of the topics.


Students are required to pass both coursework and examination components in order to pass the course.
